Author Tia Walker once said, “To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors.” This quote rings true for our client who we will be discussing in today’s blog post.
It can be daunting to be given the task of assisting your parents as they age. Decisions regarding home management or repairs on the folks’ longtime abode can be overwhelming. As a family-owned company, we understand these situations better than most. That is why when our client’s family contacted us about shingle replacement, we were excited to help.
The house is in Westport, Connecticut. Westport is in Fairfield County and part of Connecticut’s Gold Coast that includes Long Island Sound. Westport is about 50 miles to the northeast of New York City.
Regarding our client’s Westport home, it had a large roof that was quite old. It was experiencing water leaks throughout, one of those common roofing issues that prompts the immediate need for a new roof.
When we first started on this roofing project, there was another contractor on-site. As we said before, this house had been a well-lived-in home for many years. In that span, “life” got in the way for the homeowner, and some upkeep was understandably postponed or neglected on various parts of the house.
Since it’s hard to have two contractors working on different things at the same time in the exact same space (especially for a large roof replacement), our project manager, Nick, had to coordinate scheduling to maximize efficiency and convenience for everyone involved.
The other contractor was working on vent installation, which coincided with the roof replacement. Therefore, Nick had to direct the other team on the type of vent as well as placement and projected installation time.
We know this is not something a roofing company might normally do. However, we always have our client’s best interests at heart, and we want their house to turn out immaculately, no matter what it takes, even teaming up with other contractors.
For the new roof, we did a combination of GAF asphalt shingles in a charcoal color, and EPDM flat roof membrane in black. These colors were highly complementary to each other.
As a roofing contractor, we are always talking about asphalt roofing shingles. Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roof shingles you will see on homes today. And the GAF asphalt shingles used are an excellent budget roof solution. They come at a low cost, budget-wise, but provide durability and peace of mind for almost any type of roof.
As for an EPDM roof, that’s another type of roof covering. Let’s explain what EPDM means. Technically, EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer … so that’s why we contractors just say EPDM! Anyway, EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane that is used as a flat roofing solution (as opposed to, say, roof shingles) all over the world.
EPDM roof colors are available in black and white, and there are a variety of thicknesses and widths. If you are a homeowner looking for an environmentally friendly roofing solution, an EPDM roof is an excellent choice. It is composed of recycled materials, with a bonus that it is extremely budget friendly if cost is an issue.
Due to some client constraints, we needed to install the roof replacement in sections. We decided to prioritize the flat roof first, because that was where the homeowner was having the most issues.
A large section of the flat roof was covered by a tarp, which was really offering only cursory protection against the elements. As such, water would seep through when there was a storm. Not only was this a threat to the outside of her home, but also to the inside as well.
Obviously, we needed to repair it as soon as possible. There was a catch, though. The EPDM roof, while budget friendly, is highly dependent on the elements when applying. Weather in the Northeast at the time of this install was less than ideal, and that would cost us time initially. Project manager Nick had to watch the weather forecast closely to determine a time to ensure the flat roof was applied in optimal conditions.
Once the Northeast weather cooperated and the EPDM roof application was finished, we came back a couple of months later to work on the remainder of the roofing project. We did the rest of the roof replacement using those (budget friendly) GAF asphalt shingles.
With a lot of hard work and dedication, we were able to lay the rest of the roof shingles in a mere two days. After such a long wait, the client and her family were so pleased.
The roof replacement project came out great. Not only did this home get the cosmetic makeover that it desperately needed, but this roof with GAF shingles and EPDM covering once again offered protection from the elements.
The story doesn’t end here, though.
The client’s family was so impressed with the work that we did, one of the daughters had us come out to start discussing new roof shingles for her place. They have also referred us to their family friends, and we were approached about a chimney repair on the original homeowner’s house.
We were happy to help this client and her family with a roofing solution. Providing our customers with peace of mind is one of our favorite aspects of this job. We can do the same for you, your roofing project, and your peace of mind. Contact us about a free roofing quote today.
