Today’s roof replacement blog post takes us to Riverside, Connecticut. Not only is it close to New York City, but Riverside is also a suburb many would argue is one of the best places to live in Connecticut. This Fairfield County town is full of family parks, great schools, and fantastic mom-and-pop shops.
If sunshine and waffles are a great way to wake up, then waking up to rain and puddles on the floor has to be the worst. It’s a sure-fire way to ruin your day, if not weeks. Because we all know leaks (like water puddles on the floor) mean something bigger, something costly, and potentially time-consuming. Leaks coming from your ceiling usually mean you have a roof repair or roof replacement situation on your hands.
Our Riverside client in today’s blog post experienced one of those days. He woke up thinking he was going to have a great day, only to have his parade rained on, literally. Irritated and annoyed, he called his neighbor.
The neighbor just recently had a roof replacement done by Gunner a couple of weeks prior and was very happy with the new roof and our work (which, of course, makes us very happy as well!). The neighbor gave him our contact information, and Brandon reached out immediately. After explaining the issues that he was experiencing to our office manager, we sent our project manager out to Riverside for an assessment and inspection.
The roof was older and in bad shape. It was leaking in multiple areas, meaning several layers of damage. In this situation, a roof replacement was the way to go. Being a roofing company, we consider ourselves an essential service, and we know our clients feel this way too. A leaking roof can cause a range of issues. It can cause everything from water damage to a ceiling and elsewhere to mold and structural damage. All things that definitely keep a homeowner up at night. We were able to add our client to our emergency schedule, and we got started on a new roof replacement right away.
When writing blog posts, we try and keep them relatively simple – for time and reading sake. However, roofs are incredibly complex. There are many different types of roofs that usually depend on where you live. Depending on the type of roof you have, maintenance and replacement can and will vary.
A roof is not made up of just shingles and plywood. It has layers and intricate parts to keep the interior of your home safe. When your roof starts to fail, you can’t just add some shingles and hope for the best with some maintenance. Nor can you DIY a roof.
When you are replacing a roof, you have to be aware of everything underneath it, like the attic, the frame, and the electrical system. We would argue that the roof is the most important part of your home, though as a professional roofing contractor, we may be slightly biased.
Once we started removing all the shingles from the old roof, we discovered large areas of wood around the roof frame that was rotted out – hence the leaking roof from the rain. We removed and replaced the plywood, thus fixing the leaks. The new plywood will prevent further leaks, mold, and roof rot in the future. We had ideal weather during this project, and we were able to have all the roof replacement work completed in two days without any issues. Big relief for the homeowner.
As for the technical details of the roofing materials. It can be overwhelming choosing a roofing color. Some clients decide to go with what color their previous roof was, others decide to go with a completely new color. Our client went with a GAF asphalt shingle roof in the color Pewter Gray.
As we’ve mentioned many times before, GAF asphalt shingles are the top choice for asphalt shingles in the United States. Millions of homes have GAF asphalt shingles as their roofing. And we recommend them because of that and more – GAF asphalt shingles carry a robust warranty and provide long-term durability at a budget-friendly price.
Asphalt shingles also are easy to install and maintain, and your choice of color is practically unlimited. Another advantage of asphalt shingles is that they are relatively light compared with other roofing material options. That means less weight for your roof deck to support as the years pass and the elements conspire against the roof. And last but not least: Asphalt shingles are recyclable.
A word about the chosen color for this roof replacement: Grays are such a popular option these days. A Pewter Gray roof really complements the rest of the house nicely and will be in style for many years to come.
Speaking of years to come – a roof with a solid frame will last years. Decades. But not forever. So it’s best to keep up with maintenance and have it regularly checked out. If you are reading this and realize your roof is a couple of decades’ old, you may want to replace it sooner rather than later. Do an inspection. Don’t let leaks tell you it’s time for a roof replacement.
The Riverside homeowner was so happy with his new roof, the sharp-looking GAF Pewter Gray shingles, and the high-quality service we offered him here at Gunner. When he first realized his roof was leaking from the rain, he was overwhelmed. He had no idea how long this was all going to take, and how it would disrupt his daily life.
Life in its many layers is stressful enough. As a customer-first roofing company, we don’t want our clients agonizing over their leaking roofs while running around putting buckets on the floor to catch the water from the rain pouring from the ceiling. We offer emergency scheduling to our clients.
If you ever have a roofing, siding, windows, or gutters emergency, contact us today! We are always happy to assist our clients as quickly as possible.
